She obtained a BSc in Biochemistry from Universiti Malaya in 1983 before joining UTM in 1984. She was successfully awarded the Ph.D degree from King’s College London in 1988.
Since 1989, Dr. Wan Azlina Ahmad had led 16 research projects with a total cumulative grant of RM 5 million obtained either from government (IRPA, FRGS, TechnoFund : MOSTI&MOA), MTDC UTM, BiotechCorp or industry (DBKL-UNDP, ExxonMobil). Her research projects are pioneer fields of biotechnology in Malaysia for example gold extraction from low grade ores, battery recycling, bioremediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater and colour pigment production from bacteria. From her 16 research projects, 8 of the projects were included under pre-commercialization category and 1 project under commercialization category (BioNexus Partner Program, Malaysian Biotechnology Corperation).
Dr. Wan Azlina Ahmad has 11 publications in index journal-ISI (CIF – 24.196, total citation – 38), 8 chapters in book, 2 original books, 68 other publications (proceeding etc.), supervise 1 Fellow Post-Doctoral, 29 MSc., 8 Ph.D, 5 patent applications, 2 TradeMarks, 3 Invention Disclosures and 15 R&D awards from local (ITEX, BioMalaysia) and international (IENA, BIS, IIFME) organizations.. Her expertise is also recognized by external parties which include her appointment as Johor Biotechnology Advisor (2002-2004), Honorary Visiting Senior Research Fellow (King’s College London, 1994-1995), Alumni International Training programme in Biotechnology (GBF, Germany), Exco of Malaysian Biochemistry Society, NSF scholarship assessor and participant of the IGINITE program 2009 (co-organized by BiotechCorp and Cambridge University). Moreover, her two research products were chosen amongst 20 Malaysia biotechnology products as the most potential product for commercialization through BNET programme 2010 (co-organized by BiotechCorp and Frost & Sullivan. She also helped to raise UTM’s image through her research projects via printed (magazine and newspaper) or electronic media (RTM and TV3).
